1400 - Color Controls: Mac v. PC

2008-05-15 by pr_roark

The good news is that the 1400 ICM mode accepts QTR's "Create ICC-
RGB" ICCs.

The bad news is that the driver's native ramp in the ICM mode has a
very steep final slope into the deep shadows that does not appear to
allow the best control with matte papers. (The Gray Gamma 2.2 95% =
100%, give or take a very small amount. There should be about 1%
difference, I believe.)

Use of an ICC in the Photoshop/Elements Print Preview with the driver
set to "Color Controls," at least on Windows XP, has a very nice
slope that linearizes better -- near perfect. This also leaves the
manual controls open to users. I'm inclinded to go this route with
with matte papers. (Glossy will require NCA mode and an ICC, but the
driver's problem cross-over is never used with glossy profiles.)

Question: Are Mac and PC (currently) uniform in how these "Color
Controls" are implemented?

In the past, with at least some Mac OSs, profiles I had made in
Windows did not print the same when run through a Mac unless "No
Color Adjustment" was selected in the driver.

I'm also wondering of a newer Mac that has Windows XP also running
would be able to test this.

Thanks. (Hope this doesn't start a Mac v. PC war -- though they can
be entertaining in limited doses.)
