OT Does processing affect sharpness and grain?

2002-02-08 by Scott Hendershot

Hello all,

This is a off topic post but might have relavance.

I have noticed increased grain and loss of sharpness in my lab processed
film lately. I'm wondering if all c-41 processing is equal. Example; one
hour labs must do something different in order to get the film processed and
printed and out the door in one hour. Do they process at higher temperatures
to increase the throughput? Would such practices cause increased grain and
decreased sharpness?

I worked in a custom lab for several years and as I recall process times for
dip and dunk were more like 25 minutes plus drying time. This was quite some
time ago and memory does fail.
