Both the 1280 and the 2200 are older out of production machines and have various liabilities, depending on which inks are used. If you are going to make a jump from the 1280 you might consider getting into something more current. The technology of printers and inks really has come a long way since those days. If you want an excellent out-of-the-box B&W and color printer with OEM pigment inks then the best advice you've gotten so far is the 2400 (and even that is about to be replaced by the new 2880). It can do color and BW on matte and the new fiber glossy papers. You can read about using it with a simple work flow at article #9 at the link below. These are fairly expensive printers, but with the new 2880 being released the prices on 2400s will be dropping, and refurbs are available. If you want to use a pure carbon (with no color pigments) approach and are willing to refill carts or use a CIS then the new 1400 with Paul Roark's Eboni-based ink set, sold by MIS, is definitely the way to go. The 1400 is also less expensive than the 2400. I hope this helps.
