Digital BW, The Print

I am using an Epson 4880 with the OEM K3 ink set.  I was wondering how 
any of you are compensating for what I call gloss differential, meaning 
the areas that are pure white or close to where little or no ink is 
layed down on the paper?  I have tried using "high point shift" in the 
ABW printer driver and protective spray, but was wondering if there was 
another way.
