See http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Embedding_Photoshop_Curves_in_ICCs.pdf for information on making these ICCs. While a spectro is ideal for this, one can use a flatbed scanner. See http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Making_B-W_ICCs-GrayCard.pdf With these ICCs the workflow is "color managed" with respect to relative densities (that is, the monitor should match the print), the system can be linearized to account for variable, and new papers can be profiled fairly easily.
