Basically, it sounds like you're comparing the compressed-shadows
Gray Gamma 2.2 workspace output with the linear QTR output -- they
are different. The UTR2 workflow with ICCs is a "color managed"
workflow that will "see" the workspace you're in and match it.
You're probably working in gray space Gray Gamma 2.2 -- which I also
like and recommend. Look at your "Gray" workspace Photoshop setting,
shown and set at Edit>Color Settings

There are a number of ways to deal with the different printing
characteristics of the color managed (ICC) workflows and those that
are not (like the QTR rip, Epson ABW, etc.). Some convert the file
to the gray matte space (ICC) that is in the QTR download.

I don't like to convert my files, so I use a curve in Photoshop (on a
layer) to make the conversion.

In general, see http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/R1800-Workflow.pdf
Among other things, there is a link there to a zip file that contains
the curve I use.

Good luck with the system.
