Addendum: I forgot to mention that Steve and I discussed the possibility that my washing may have removed some coating. He gave another part of the unwashed border a quick blast of compressed air, which removed more dirt than my quick brushing had. Thinking that some dirt may be trapped in the texture pits, after I got home I gave another spot a prolonged compressed air cleaning, from several angles. It made a big difference and looks about as bright as the washed area. Have to put it on the spectro to be sure, but I'm satisfied that the visible discoloration is just dirt and not an OBA issue.
