When I went into the framing industry one of the standards I deviated from was standard openings. I did not like getting a mat for an 8x10 photo that had an opening of 7 1/2 x 9 1/2. Instead my company standardized on 1/4 inch smaller so 8x10 is 7 3/4 x 9 3/4 so that only 1/8 inch is covered by the mat. Of course my bigger problem was that I didn't want to crop 8x12 down to 8x10 or 12x18 down to 11x14 which is the main reason I got into framing. In the case of floating the image so that nothing is lost you mostly have to go custom but wholesale mat companies such as mine will cut anything you want.
