Digital BW, The Print

Prior to having a monitor calibration system I use a combination of custom dot gain curve -- see http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Monitor-Profiling.htm -- the Adobe Gamma and monitor controls to match my monitor to B&W prints (then PiezoBW).  In some respects I actually think it did a better job -- for B&W.  I now use a standard calibration package, and it's not perfect.
