Greetings, I tried it on a Katrina image: http://www.christerart.com/slideshow3/show_1115.jpg and it did exactly what you mentioned - darkened the highlights and lightened the dark areas which in my mind made the image less powerful. And it is indeed agonizingly slow. As far as I am concerned it does nothing someone who has a decent knowledge and experience cannot do him/herself.
