The best solution (and the one you don't want to hear about) is not to  
use iMacs for serious image editing. But, the larger iMac does have a  
better grade of screen than the smaller model, though still not as  
good as the Cinema Displays. You can start by increasing your ambient  
(room) lighting, to make a better balance between the lowest the iMac  
setting and the ambient lighting. We plan to offer brightness-dimming- 
in-software functionality in an upcoming version of our Spyder3  
products, mostly to deal with these insufficiently dimmable iMacs  
(though dimming displays in software is a compromise). In the  
meantime, the software that currently offers this capability is  
ColorEyes Display, which can be used with the Spyder3, if you already  
have one, or purchased with a Spyder3 if you do not.
