I would suggest you try OCP German inks. I have a great success with them in my R1800

I haven't done any serious digital printing before, let alone with
third-party inks, so I thought buying a first set of factory-filled

Sure, it's a bit more expensive upfront, but not radically so, and it's
a tiny sum in the long term.

I don't understand "purge them dry" - could you explain?
I guess plain water will rinse the syringe sufficiently.

Yeah, that also occurred to me - I thought I'd buy the filled set
initially, then another set of empty carts. But I guess I might as well
get 'em all together.
