Here's a little app that will lower the brightness of your display. It may or may not work the way you need for image editing, but I've tried it and it certainly does dim the display. I would not suggest be overly aggressive with it, since it may also create other issues. The loss of levels is something you may want to be aware of. I don't use it, but it just might be what you need as a workaround until you can solve this issue in another manner.
