I look at the starting points at usually within 1 unit of where they probably ought to be.  In comparing multiple units of PFP, i1, and another X-Rite I have, they all seem to be slightly different. I'm not convinced that at the price point of the PFP spectro more accuracy is possible.  However, the relative increase or decrease from the starting points seem to be more consistent.

I use 30% for each step -- that is, LK = 30% PK + 70% base.  LLK = 30% LK ...

I've used 50% to 20% steps with good results.  So, you have some flexibility.
