Printing B&W with color inks is nearly hopeless. Trying to balance the colors to get a true neutral usually ends up with the same results you've experienced. The 1400, however, has a small enough drop size that with QuadToneRip you can print with only the Claria black ink and get a print that is reasonably smooth. However, I find the Claria black a bit on the greenish side. So, what I did on my 260 (an older, letter size Claria printer) is make profiles that used mostly black ink but also a bit of magenta to make them neutral. See http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Claria-BW.pdf It'll take a little effort to learn how to use QTR, but it's worth the work. The profiles I made may not be perfect for the 1400, but they can probably be modified to work. There are also lots of dedicated B&W inksets for the 1400. MIS (inksupply.com) and inkjetmall.com have options. I describe some of the MIS options at http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info Good luck with the B&W.
