I also have problems with his workflow. It seems to extreem. Try 
Dan Culbertsons method of color seperation layers instead, its 
easier to understand... for me anyways. Also try John Woolfs 
curve method and Nevins transfer curve. Although they don't 
seperate the tones of the image, the prints are quite good.
