CDT, Thank you very much for your reply. I will carefully read the reply you have included in this email. Also, I need to reread the manual for my Spyder2 Express and see what I need to do to calibrate my monitor. I'm trying to get back to photography and at this time I'm feeling like a juggler, trying to learn about Camera Raw, Photoshop CS4, dedicated b&w printers, QuadToneRIP, and calibrating my monitor. But, after I retire on April 30th, I'll more time to dedicate to photography. Hopefully, the to do list to my wife plans to give me will be small. Thanks once again, Regards from Sacramento, Jorge jorgegaj@... or pegasus@... ________________________________ From: Cdtobie <CDTobie@...> To: "DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com" <DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Thu, December 31, 2009 12:04:35 PM Subject: Re: [Digital BW] Calibrating my monitor On Dec 31, 2009, at 9:52 AM, Jorge Gaj <jorgegaj@yahoo. com> wrote: > David & others > > Thank you very much for you response. I would be tempted to suggest not loading any of the Samsung Utilities, as they may conflict with your color management. But I'll paste a reply from elsewhere that offers a more detailed description of which components to definately avoid, and which ones might be of use. CDT <<Regarding calibration of recent Samsung monitors: for better or for worse, Samsung has replaced the traditional on-display adjustments for backlight, contrast, and more, with a software-only solution they call Magic Tune. No more buttons on the monitor itself. Any adjustment to backlight, contrast, RGB sliders, and possibly global temperature if available for your monitor, will have to be done from Magic Tune. You therefore must have it installed. However, there are some functions of Magic Tune that will interfere with hardware calibration: Magic Bright is one, Magic Color is another. Disable both. From Magic Tune, you can also launch a software-only gamma adjustment application. It is very similar to other such applications, like Adobe Gamma, in which the user is presented with striped squares inside of squares, and asked to make visual adjustments. Good, sometimes, but your hardware calibrator is supposed to be much, much better. You can discard the LCD Gamma application altogether, and at the very least, not launch it. Similar to Adobe gamma loader, it may already be in your startup apps. CodeStuff Starter, and other free utilities, can give you a better view of all you startup applications. Finally, Natural Color is a color (not gamma) calibration software solution that is independent of Magic Tune. The same as for software calibration of gamma applies here: since you have a hardware calibrator, there is no need for the software. Having used Magic Tune, I should add that the clock and phase adjustments (mysteriously labeled 'coarse' and 'fine'), are very finicky. You can get them right instantly by going to:http:// www.techmind. org/lcd/phasing. html, and with that page displayed on your monitor, click the 'auto adjustment' button on that panel of Magic Tune.>> > > > I'm somewhat confused with the process and I need some advice. > > Hope you all have a wonderful new years and let 2010 brings us some > wonderful B&W photos. > > jorge > > Regards from Sacramento, > > Jorge > > jorgegaj@yahoo. com or pegasus@surewest. net > > > > > > > > ____________ _________ _________ __ > From: C D Tobie <CDTobie@aol. com> > To: DigitalBlackandWhit eThePrint@ yahoogroups. com > Sent: Tue, December 22, 2009 9:36:27 AM > Subject: Re: [Digital BW] Calibrating my monitor > > > > On Dec 21, 2009, at 10:27 AM, JorgeG wrote: > >> I have some issues and questions regarding the calibration of my >> monitor.
