Hi. I've used both the Somerset Velvet and the Epson Watercolor paper often over the years. The velvet comes in a radiant white version and is also available at Blick in just white which I have yet to try. I tried the the photo enhanced version and did not care for it much, as I thought that it lost most of the character of the uncoated velvet paper. The best I've been able to do with the velvet on a 1200 is about a density of 1.47 with Eboni and UT inks. The coated photo enhanced version will do better than that.As I recall somewhere in the 1.60 plus area though it's been a while since I tested it.The Epson watercolor paper is also coated and I've used it mostly for color prints where it works well but, like the somerset photo enhanced,I don't care as much for it for B&W.Much better papers are now available. If you care most for maximum black you won't like the velvet uncoated paper. If you don't mind something like the dynamic range of old platinum/paladium prints, you might like it very much.It is one of the most even toned papers I've used over it's full range and it definitely is a cool printing, closer to neutral paper for the ink sets I've used with it. I'm currently using it for a series of Celtic ruins, high crosses etc that is in progress. What differences have you seen between the two?
