Welcome: I am also new to this site. It appears that my experience has been similiar to yours. Your comments made me think of Amadou Diallo, who published: MASTERING Digital Black and While. If you haven't read it, I encourage you to get it and "savor" it. I am complelled to quote from it.

 You can own the most expensive equipment in the world, but there is simply no underestimating the difference that experience makes in producing fine art prints of consistant and high quality.(ch.6, p.257).
