I would have to agree with Mike. It looks like they just used Select Color
Range in Photoshop. The other question is that they say they have 11 zones
and each one is twice as bright (or one stop greater) as the previous one.
Just off the top of my head that implies a 10-bit system and since you can't
layer in 16-bit mode in PS, I am not sure what they are actually doing.

Thanks for the input ! I will try out the demo version and see if it makes any sense or if I can gain anything by using it over Photoshop.

Actually I did buy it. It does have some advantages over the curves & 
levels. You can make 11 adjustments while viewing the result before 
you commit to them.  I'm not sure how you would do that in photoshop?

Sorry for late post to this thread.

I also bought it, and think it useful. It's not really THE Zone 
System, of course, but has a certain resonance with those who use 
Ansel's insights to advantage.

Bizarrely, they recommend its use for colorizing B & W images.

It to me it is a useful elaboration of the "Color Balance" filter. 11 
"zones" rather than "shadows, mids, highlights", any channel(s) you 
want to affect. You can adjust the "width" of the "zones". And you 
can work "by the numbers" rather than by trying to match curve shapes.

I think it will also be useful in tweaking profiles.

Finally, although the instructions state it is to be used on the 
original file, one can easily work in layers by creating a duplicate 
of the Background layer, and using the Ozone filter on that instead.
