3800 printing only part of page

3800 printing only part of page

2010-09-21 by horstenj

I have a very odd issue. I'm printing some files on my 3800 a bit larger than I usually do, all of them 17" wide. However, the 3800 now most of the times (the strange thing is: not always) does not print the full width of the image. It leaves the left side blank. The other odd thing is that the white space is not always the same size, it varies.

I've tried a lot of different strategies.
- I started with layered 16 bit B&W TIF files. Changed to flattened to 8 bit B&W files (all QTR-gray profile). Seemed to help in the beginning, but issue re-appeared
- First thought it was a QTR issue, but same thing happens printing from photoshop and qimage via the epson driver
- Tried with two PCs, Vista 64bit and XP 32bit, issue remains.
- switched on and off the printer several times to reset it, issue remains

I've no clue and I'm out of options. And an exhibition coming up in four days..... )-: Adrenaline is pumping.... Any suggestions??

I had this same issue a while back. I believe I resolved it by disabling auto
paper detection on the printer, but I can't recall for sure. I am at work so I
can't have a look at my setup to confirm.

I had a similar problem with my 3800 but mine was printing only some portion
on the top and the rest of the page blank. The symptoms were intermittent
and I could often "make it go away" by rebooting. Also if I enabled the
preview (if I recall in CS3 and earlier it was always there but with CS4 it
is now and option that's off by default) and looked at it prior to printing
I would see only a portion of the print was going to print..

I've traced the source to be the USB connection between the computer and the
printer. I'm not sure why but somehow the printer thought that it had
received all the file information when it obviously had not. My suggestion
would be to try a different USB cable, shorter if possible. If it must be
longish then try a better quality cable. Also, if there is one, remove any
USB Hub.

Seem to remember I had this too, when I was using 17" wide paper cut from a roll. If my cut was not absolutely straight, and the LH edge was shorter than the RH edge, the printer would "measure" the width incorrectly. Same thing happened sometimes if the paper was very slightly skewed. Disabling paper size detection did it for me.

Indeed that's what I'm doing. The prints are still slightly skewed but I can easily cut it straight. Thanks!
