Canson+K7?

Canson+K7?

2011-12-16 by hlockwood

I'm looking at Canson Rag Photographique 310 gsm, in combination with
Cone K7 Neutral inks on an R2400 printer. Although the paper is very
white, Canson states there are no OBAs added. They also make a strong
archival claim.
For profiles, I used both the Han Photo Rag and Han Photo Rag Bright
White; they appear to produce essentially identical results. Printing
Jon Cone's Piezography test pattern appears to produce smooth gradation
throughout the lightness spectrum, especially at the dark end, from 90
to 100%. This is a subjective evaluation since I don't have a
densitometer.
So, the question: Has anyone here had experience with this paper that
they would care to share?
Much appreciated,Harry

Harry,

I do not have direct experience with this paper, but I have used Cone K7 Glossy inks with Canon's Baryta Photographique paper and love the results. Great image depth, color, and tonality. I find the paper base to be just slightly neutral to warm which is a great compliment to the inks.

Best Regards,
George

I have used K7 with Canson Platine Fibre Rag which gives nice results - best with a custom curve from Jon. The pick with the K7 inks is Jon's own Type 5 paper in my experience.

Re: Canson+K7?

Harry -
I started using Canson Rag Photographique in the past year, and still also use Han Photo Rag.
Personally, I like the Canson Paper better - I'm not certain why tho! I do like the warm tone of
photo rag, but the whiter Canson paper is becoming more attractive to me though. I think it's the
slightly smoother texture that appeals most.
BTW, I believe I downloaded the Canson profile (I believe it's one that works for several of their papers,
but may be wrong - it's more than a year ago). Anyway, the profile is very accurate!

At this point, I've only printed with it using Epson's K3 inks (mostly for B&W) on both my 2400,
and a 4880. They both print very well with it. I've been thinking of trying Jon's K7 inks with the
2400 first. Too expensive to switch to the 4880 until I know it won't clog up, which they seem to have
a history of doing. (at least mine and a friends seem to require more maintenance than
printing time.

Is anyone else using Cone's K7 on a 4880?

I"ve been printing with PIezotone inks on Rag Photographique for some time now, as well as some custom K7 ink blends on the paper. It's wonderful paper, I no longer use PhotoRag as this has taken it's place when a relatively smooth and white paper is required.
By the way, K7 inks have no reputation for clogging, even the previous product cycle, the Piezotones, don't. I have used Piezotones in a 9600 and now a 9880 for years, and K7s in a little 1900 and a 7800 for a long time, Ink and nozzles performance has been far more reliable than the OEM Epson inks in the 7800, a 9800 I used for color for years, and now a 9900.
