A new type of Camera Color Comparison

A new type of Camera Color Comparison

2012-03-29 by C D Tobie

This is a new way I came up with to compare the native color capabilities of various cameras, here applied to the new Canon 5D Mark lll, compared to its predecessor the Mark ll. Let me know what you think of the method, and the results.

Well done David, thank you! It might be interesting to see how much of
this is difference between models and how much is variance within the
same model.

It was in development long before the Passport came out. Its a full size, higher patch number target, with built in tripod mount, replaceable target sheets, and other unique features. But yes, its a color target thats not a simple flat laminated board, so in that sense its like the Passport.

I can provide further samples at a later date. One needs to have the cameras one wants to compare in the same place at the same time to assure similar results. I am sure I'll be surrounded by Mark llls at a few shooting events this year for comparison within a model, and will have access to the last and next generation Nikons for comparison between those as well. The metric involved is not an absolute one, but its a consistent and convenient one...

The Nikon D800 has only two MF backs above it on the Color Depth scale
of DXO, one MF back below the D800 and then the D3X, so the last ranking
fifth. Both in the MF class. Overall the D800 is leading now.

The first Canon is at 13 in ranking, the 5D MK II at 20. The 5D MK III
is not yet measured. I have a 5D MK II.

The 5D MK III is now measured at DXO, number 15 in ranking on color
depth, four Nikons, several MF backs, two Sony's and one Canon ahead of
it. Overall at place 10.
