Apparently some imbecile somewhere in the line between the factory and Jerry's Artarama has decided that it would be a good idea to stick an adhesive bar code label on every single sheet of this paper. Any one else have any of this stuff or know where the problem originates? dk

I have seen the stickers on Arches from some other outlets also. So, you have to be careful. I've never seen it on Dick Blick's stock, however. Have you noticed how little difference in brightness there is between the standard Arches and the "Bright" (still no OBAs)? I'm not sure anyone would see the difference. The painters I respect the most in my various art groups almost always come back to Arches as being the best (and it's cheaper than good inkjet paper). It can't, of course, match the smoothness of a coated inkjet paper, but for large sizes on the wall, it looks good. Likewise the dmax is not up to the best coated papers, but it's better than some inkjet art papers, and, again, fine for its intended use. I like that it comes in sheets. The "full sheet" is likely to become my standard for that size print. Large sheets of the inkjet papers I prefer are not always easy to find, and I don't particularly like to deal with rolls. Arches makes "elephant" sizes, but shipping, damage, and availability make it not as attractive. Arches rolls appear to be the route I'll take to 24 x 51" panoramas. I believe a dry mount press will flatten the internally gelatin sized paper. I have not tried this yet, but going to a sheet feed for even these types of prints is my hope. Paul www.PaulRoark.com

I realized long ago that brightness and dmax don't really mean all that much, especially dmax. Arches is not very bright and can't get all that black, but the prints are just richer and have more depth than the coated, pricey papers I have tried and I have spent a small FORTUNE trying them. I have also found one other paper that simply glows from within, but I am keeping that little jewel to myself!! ;-) Jerry's has agreed to replace 40 of the 50 defective sheets. They will talk to the distributor about the rest. This thread and never buying from them again are my revenge! Also, Jerry's claims that prices on Arches have doubled in the last several months. Can anyone confirm this? David Kachel ___________________ Artist-Photographer Fine B&W Photographs www.davidkachel.com david@... Gallery: www.reddoorfinephotographs.com director@... David, I always buy my Arches 140# cold press 100 at a time. That way they come packaged by Arches in bags of 25. Then I do a custom printer profile which will hold for the batch. I am guessing there would not be any stickers when it comes from the factory. The last time I ordered I paid $3.60 per sheet. Cheap Joe's has them on their website today for $3.80 per sheet in lots of 100. Sometimes I can print on Arches and it looks wonderful and other images do not look good at all. I generally print on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag. Aw, come on, tell us what this glow within paper is. If you like Photo Rag I can tell you how to get Photo Rag in giant sheets for half the cost per square foot of smaller sheets. And guaranteed no damaged corners. Just an idea. Thought you guys might like an update on this. Jerrys Artarama finally replaced the paper in question with paper also having stickers on it! They replaced defective paper with defective paper, and now they are digging their heels in. So it appears that Jerrys is no longer a viable source for Arches Hot Press (and who knows what other papers they will be adding stickers to). Does anyone have another source for Arches Hot Press without stickers? Jerrys claims it is the distributor Colart/Canson's who is doing this. If true then we will need sellers who buy their paper from someone other than Colart. David Kachel ___________________ Artist-Photographer Fine B&W Photographs www.davidkachel.com david@... Subject: [Digital BW] Re: Adhesive stickers on Arches Hot Press >>> Have you called Dick Blick to see if they still have "stickerless" Arches HP? In the past they have been OK from that source. Actually, I have done better than that. Today I spoke directly with Cansons. Here is the real story ColArt/Cansons will package paper the way resellers want it. Its resellers who have insisted on the stickers. Exactly the opposite of what Jerrys told me. To buy 25 sheet packages without stickers, you want to request Cansons stock number 523-14. (That's 140lb Hot Press.) It turns out this is a case of retailers making their own lives easier while not giving a damn about the buyer. Cansons is blameless and were VERY pleasant to deal with; the exact opposite of Jerrys. I also called danielsmith.com today. Talked to a fellow named Colin. He too was the exact opposite of Jerrys. Very pleasant to deal with and most eager to be helpful. They have the stickerless paper, though apparently use their own stock number: 159-281-003. They sell the paper with stickers too, so be sure to be specific. David Kachel ___________________ Artist-Photographer Fine B&W Photographs www.davidkachel.com david@... Thought you guys might like an update on Jerrys Artarama. I vowed not to do business with them again over the Arches barcode sticker debacle, but then discovered a $50 credit I had with them. I needed another type of paper and decided that one last order to use up that credit would be OK No such luck. They sent the right paper, right color, WRONG surface. They just tried to get out of exchanging it by implying I had given them the wrong stock number, as if I know their stock numbers. Then they tried to claim I gave the wrong description. Then they tried to tell me I had to pay return shipping. Even after I pointed them to my order history so they could see I had ordered this paper in the past and not what they sent, they still tried to weasel out of it. Don't do business with these people.
