How to get a printer running after a long delay?

How to get a printer running after a long delay?

2012-08-10 by pdesmidt tds.net

I've had my 4880 parked with Paul's base installed for about a year.
Every month or so I run a cleaning cycle. The Carbon 6 cartridges,
which are about 1/2 full, have been sitting on a shelf. I'd like to
get the printer up-and-running again. Do you have any tips regarding
this? Off-hand, it seems like I could: A. try agitating the
cartridges over a couple of days, prime and install, or B. Drain the
cartridges, rinse them out with RODI water, fill with ink, prime and
re-install. The cartridges are of the clear, funnel fill-able
variety.

I think I'd clean the carts thoroughly and re-mix fresh Carbon-6.

With respect to clear carts, I recommend covering them with black plastic or otherwise keeping light off the inks. I was once told by a person in the industry that in sunny climates clear CIS units, even with ink that has biocides in it, have been known to grow algae. I've never seen this, but it is apparently a risk if ink has too much light hitting it. It makes me wonder about clear carts that are too exposed.

I don't know how water that goes through a RO unit compares to distilled water. I use distilled. I believe the lab people use a double distilled water. (De-ionized?)

Hi,

Thanks for the advice. I agree that it's better to err on the safe side.

'RODI' stands for reverse osmosis de-ionized water. It's what we use to
mix up our water for our salt water aquarium system, it's very pure, but I
can certainly use distilled water. I keep my computer room pretty dark,
and thus algae growth should be pretty unlikely. I'm more worried about
mold.

As long as we're on the subject of getting an Epson 4880 up and running again…

Are there good online instructions for cleaning 4880 heads? I knew all the tricks for smaller machines like the 2200, but I've never had a problem with the 4880 before, so I'm a cleaning novice.

If it matters: it is possible that one or two cartridges ran out of ink. I am using OVI inks in MIS opaque (bag) cartridges, so ink might have gone too low without my realizing it. *If* that happens, are you supposed to do anything special, or will the printer know enough to re-prime itself?

Thanks.

Myron.

The pump will pull air as well as liquid, so it will prime a completely dry line.

I had forgotten that Epson changed it's wide format cartridges. Oh well.
The printer does have a set of partially full cartridges, and I think I
might have a set of empties from a 9600 from a place I used to work at. I
could use a MIS bottom fill adapter, a syringe, and a chip re-setter to
rinse out and load cleaning fluid into the used Epson cartridges, right?

You can flush, refill and reset the chips on those carts. The MIS bottom fill adapter with a little plastic tube on the end works best for wide format carts. See http://www.inksupply.com/product-details.cfm?pn=MIS-FADP-10 Watch that the tubing does not slide off and stay in the cart.
