Review of a new option for image editing systems

Review of a new option for image editing systems

The upcoming iMac has an amazing feature set, and an amazing screen. I may even fit the bill as an all-in-one imaging workstation for many users.

There used to be a time when Spyder display colorimeters were called
spectrocolorimeters, whatever that meant. Now I see in the article that
they are upgraded to the category spectro-radiometers, usually that
category has a price tag beginning at 10K $.

Hi Ernst,

You have misunderstood what was said. Spyders are calibrated using a spectro-radiometer. And you have cross-attributed the term spectrocolorimeter. The unit referred to as an inverse spectrocolorimeter is the SpyderPrint device, which is a six band reflective measurement device, rather than an RGB colorimeter.

Ernst,

There is a difference between a colorimeter, and a spectrocolorimeter. It is how they separate the colors of light to be measured. The first uses changing filters (some colored LEDs), and the latter a prism with sensors placed at the band of the spectrum they are to measure.

A big difference in their designs, and also their accuracy. The spectrocolorimeter is more accurate. And also much more expensive.

Ben

David,

After reading it again I apologise, the construction is somewhat
confusing though:

 >But the iMac displays will be factory calibrated with a
spectro-radiometer, just as Datacolor Spyder display calibrators are, so
recalibration over time using a hardware calibrator should be aligned
nicely to bring the iMac color back to the same standard it was
calibrated to at the factory.<
