Epson 1430 Working… for now

Epson 1430 Working… for now

2013-04-08 by remononaz1

I purchased an Epson 1430 about two months ago so that I could have a dedicated black and white printer and a dedicated color printer. The new printer became the color printer and my older 1400 is carrying on as my dedicated black and white machine. This past weekend I finally got the kinks out of the 1430 and it is up and running. Here is an overview of my issues and their resolutions, which may be of help to other using the 1430 with third party inks.

Problem 1 – Old Style 1400 Cartridges: Apparently there have been changes to the chip on older 1400 cartridges. With the 1430, you will have to get the new style. If you are just getting your first cartridges now, this is not an issue.

Problem 2 – New Cartridge Won't Extinguish Low Ink LED: This turned out to be a bad cartridge. A rare thing, but I guess it happens. The black ink cartridge of my new set worked for about a day and then the LED came on. No amount of purging, refilling, resetting or software changes would correct this. I purchased a new cartridge, filled it and the problem went away.

Problem 3 – Random Low Ink Conditions: In the process of making a few prints, I ran into the situation where the low ink light for magenta, then later yellow, ink came on mid-print. An inspection of the cartridges showed that they were not out of ink, but it was visible that there was no ink in the section of the cartridge between the port and the chip. Holding the cartridge and rotating it 180 degrees caused the empty area to refill and upon replacing the cartridge in the printer, the LED went out. The printer picked up exactly where it left off and managed to finish the print without a single visible defect. (I thought that was pretty impressive!)

So, at this time I am actually making good color prints. How long I can go before some new issue crops up is to be seen. Setting up and using the 1430 with third party ink certainly has been far more trouble than I anticipated.

Hi

In response to your post, I am confused.

Are you are using Epson cartridges in your new printer and refillable cartridges in your old 1400?

You mention "refilling" , so I guess you are using third-party refillable cartridges rather than trying to refill Epson cartridges. Can you please give more information.

Thanks, Paul

I'm using all MIS, third party cartridges. The 1400 has the old style and the 1430 is using the new ones. I've not tried actually refilling a genuine Epson cartridge, but if it can be done, I'd like to try it. As noted the new style cartridges in the 1430 are not 100% reliable, though I think the reliability will improve over time.
