Ilford Mono Silk

Re: [Digital BW] Ilford Mono Silk

I like the Mono a lot.
I primarily work B&W with Leica Monochrom and the prints are of very good quality
Epson 4900 with ImagePrint software
I also recently tried the Harman Gloss Baryta Warmtone good as well.

Hi,
I was ordering another box of Gold Fibre Silk and saw the Mono Silk listed. So of course I added a box of A4 to my order.

Due to illness I've hardly done a single print in the last year, so missed the release of this paper.

How are people liking it?

Thanks,
Richard

Be aware that Ilford Imaging is in insolvency and the Mono Silk will
disappear from the market. There are good alternatives with similar
whiteness, for example the Innova IFA29.

This weekend thanks to Jean Verrept from Belgium I could add the 4
qualities Calumet Museum range to SpectrumViz. The also Alpha Cellulose
based Calumet Brilliant Museum Silver Gloss White 300 gsm is as cool as
the Mono Silk but has a higher white reflection than the Mono. Not
counting the different texture it comes close to Hahnem\ufffdhle FineArt
Pearl 285gsm. Permajet Fibre Base Photo Art Pearl 290gsm belongs to the
same class.
I would expect a wider dynamic range from these papers than possible
with the Mono. Of course that depends on the Dmax possible too.

I recently profiled Canson's Platine and was thrilled with the increased
gamut over Ilford's Silk. I prefer the finish too. What do you think of it
Ernst?

Platine with the Jon Cone warm neutral ink set is my favorite combination.

One does need to use the gloss optimizer.

First, I have not printed the 600+ papers in the SpectrumViz list so can
not answer what they do in use. It is consistent but limited information
I try to gather and publish.

I did not see what could make Mono Silk special, not for B&W and not
for color.

When Ilford Imaging introduced Mono Silk last year I had some remarks on
the specifications that contradicted their claims in et rest of the
introduction. A girl/lady Ilford representative got in my opinion the
wrong answers from Ilford marketing to answer my comments. There was
more going wrong with the introduction of other papers then including
their description. "Prestige" was added to the names though :-) I think
the girl was not employed there soon afterwards as she wrote to me later
on, not the first one that had to leave. I hope she got another job
soon. I think the last year at Ilford was close to chaos.
