OT - Setting the platen gap default to wider

OT - Setting the platen gap default to wider

2017-01-09 by roark.paul@...

This should probably be in a different group, but I don't participate in the wide format groups.

My question is whether it's possible to set a 7800 and 9800 up so that when they start, the platen gap is, by default, at "wider" as opposed to its standard setting.

Thanks,

Paul

If you set it in printer setup, on the printer, it should stick always after power off/on.

On both my 7800 and 9800 it reverts to the standard setting when the machine is turned off.

This is not a smart ass answer, then don’t turn it off?

That is what my service guy says, and it may be the best answer. Actually, a better memory or paying attention to the post-it signs I have on the printers would also be good, but these solutions have proved to be inadequate.

Hi Paul,

Having a 9800 I can tell you that since I bought it (brand new) I've never turned it off and it has proven to be the answer to many other problems, including less cleaning cycles than when turning it off. This also applies to the 1430. I never turn it off and it has not done cleaning on it's own, only when I turn it off.

Hope it helps

Pablo

Paul;

You might consider setting up a custom paper profile on the printer itself. This is easy to do and would allow you to select it quickly from the printer menu. To paraphrase the manual:

PAPER SETTINGS: When you select STANDARD, the printer determines the paper thickness automatically. You can also select No. X (X can be any number between 1 to 10) to register or recall the following settings you have made (from a custom paper profile):

  • Platen gap

  • Thickness pattern

  • Thickness number

  • Cut method

  • Paper feed adjustment

  • Drying time

  • Paper suction

  • MicroWeave adjustment
Look at the PAPER SETTINGS instructions in the Epson 7800-9800 Manual. The printer will allow you to calibrate your media for optimal printing.

Gan,

Thanks for the idea. At this point I've just been leaving the printer turned on.

BTW, the old MIS "auto print" program has become obsolete, as it does not work on the newer OSs. If there were a modern substitute for that, it might have some use in terms of keeping these printers in good running shape.
