Although I have two 1160s, one for BW and one for color, I'm in
somewhat the same situation as John Brownlow, because after mining
this and other lists at length, I've concluded that four "colors" is
fine for nearly all BW but not for most color work. So I now think I
should use both 1160s for BW - and ask the same question John has. I
hope he'll post his decision and the considerations leading up to it
if I don't get to see it evolve on the list.
For me, if I had to order today, I'd order a 1280, a NoMoreCarts.com
CIS and accessories, and MediaStreet's Enhanced Generations (aka
Gen4) inkset in "bulk"/bottles. A case could be made for replacing
its hybrid/blended "Beta Black" with the less-black Gen3/Outdoor
black. Either way, that's an alternative I'd suggest for consideration
for my own low-volume, lots-of-time, and less-money situation.
If I had more printing to do and would be paid more to do it, I think
I would instead get the Epson 5500 and use their ink in their
cartridges (but not the RIP they optionally bundle with it).
Incidentally, one of it's first users said it was a surprisingly good
grayscale printer using black only at 2880. I don't think he did much
BW, but I believe someone on this list, maybe Jerry Olson, said
essentially the same thing about the 1280.
With either printer you'd have to sweat the profiling, but I would
try to have someon do it for me for what would be only a small number
of papers in my case.
