books for a newcomer to digital printing

2002-03-22 by Charles Whitaker

Much as I enjoy peppering the group with dumb questions, I figure I should
probably so some reading. :) I'd like to read up on the entire process, from
scanning through printing. I've bought books online before based on their
descriptions, and been disappointed, so I thought I'd ask the group for the
titles of books to cover all aspects of the process. Thanks to whomever can
help.

Hi Charles,

If you wouldn't mind saying, what books, and what didn't you like about
them? I'd like to know so I don't recommend the books you already have to
you ;-)

Austin

Just one relating to digital work: "The Digital Darkroom" by George Schaub.
Probably a fine book for someone, but not near enough depth for me.

Any recommendations, Austin? Or anyone else?

On hardware and software I try to stay well back from the bleeding
edge. Partly by not upgrading until supplementary documentation I'm
confident will be good is in print. Then I'm an early adopter of that
supplementary documentation. So, without fear that he might already
have them, I'll suggest that Charles save a lot of time in late
summer for "Real World Photoshop 7" and "Real World Color
Management". And consider diverting himself in the meantime,
depending on his interests, with "Photshop Restoration and
Retouching" and "Professional Photoshop 6" (on color correction).
But, good as Amazon is on pre-sales info, I try to skim in a
bookstore before actually buying.

The big gap seems to me to be scanning. I don't know of a good,
up-to-date, in depth reference on it. Nor of one on digital cameras.
Capture generally seems to me to be poorly documented except in re
traditional photography.

How about "Avoiding the Scanning Blues: A Desktop Scanning Primer", by Taz
Tally? Has anyone read this, or leafed through it?

What I'm doing is scanning 35mm Tri-X and printing on an Epson 1280 with MIS
VM. Any documentation that would help me deal with problems that show up in
printing would be a big help to me. Although maybe hextone B&W printing is
too new for its problems to be included in current books.
