Orwell double sided?

Orwell double sided?

2001-08-21 by Todd Flashner

I just got a pack of Royal Plush (AKA Orwell) from Media Street. When
confused about which side to print on I use the stick-to-the-lip test, to
feel the coating. I had trouble to tell with this paper, which is unusual.

Long story short, I printed on both sides, and low and behold, I can't tell
the two sides apart. They're both good!

Is this a fluke, or a best kept secret? Orwell is double sided?

Todd,
I never had a double sided German Etching/Orwell, and I don´t
believe that the coating is made by Hahnemühle if yours is
double sided.
But it is rather sure, that H. will come up with a double sided
PHOTO RAG in fall or winter 01.

Todd,

Think I've probably done the same thing - also reasonably good results from
the back of even Somerset - but I've not done thorough testing. I wonder if
this is an argument for the 'better' underlying paper in these brands.
Alternatively, the backs of Epson papers are nasty (certainly in colour,
IMHO)???

From an German Etching data-sheet:

"Our Mould Made Inkjet natural line German Etching Board is a ****single****
side coated, traditional fine art media. Made in
our Hahnemuhle Paper Mill, the surface inkjet coating is a special matte
coating, designed for high quality digital fine
art reproduction and print applications on inkjet plotters and printers."

I came accross this myself many times over the weekend. Royal plush is
definatley coated on both sides, whereas Orwell frankfurt, Classic Veluor is
NOT.
With the plush paper one side is usually a little nicer printing than the
other.
This adds a new wrinkle to the Clone theroy of all the versions of this paper.

Steve

It was I who started this. I've since discovered that only some of the
sheets in my pack of Plush are coated on both sides. I haven't taken out all
25 to test, but some definitely ARE, and some definitely are NOT. Don't come
to expect it will be coated on both sides, it may, or it may not!

Steve, in the prints you brought today, even though the black was very
close on both sides, and neither side had any bleed, the grads showed
the definite nasty dot gain of an uncoated paper on one side.
So maybe the back is coated just a "lil' bit", as De Niro would say.

Well, on the sheets that I had that weren't coated on both sides, there was
a marked and obvious difference between the prints on each side - one good,
one sucked. But on those that were apparently coated on both sides I
couldn't tell the sides apart.

But, as the image was on opposite sides of the same paper, I couldn't quite
side-by-side them. I might do a more controlled test next time; like using
two sheets of paper.

Since in my pack some were coated, and some not at all, it wouldn't surprise
me if some were in fact coated more than others. Who the heck knows.....

I'm using 17x22in sheets cut up for testing. So its not just the 8.5x11's
Even the New Sumerset enhanced is difficult to tell.
