profiles and transfer function

Jerry's hunt for the new location of the transfer function prompts me to wonder why it's needed. As I remember, Jerry, your workflow incorporates profiles made for you by CD Tobie; since I'm awaiting my first set of similar professionally-made profiles, I want to ask how (or why) the transfer function is employed alongside them.
