1160 and EAM Paper

1160 and EAM Paper

2002-05-17 by Doug Fisher

On the MIS page for their VM workflow, when using an 1160, VM and EAM they
say to use the heavyweight matte setting. Is this what most people here are
using for the paper setting or are they using the photo quality inkjet paper
setting? What about the position of the paper thickness lever - "0" or "+"?

Thanks,
Doug

I have just started using the ii60 with the MIS VM/EAM
and I am really happy with the results using their
published settings (provided by Paul Roark - thank you
Paul!). I use the heavyweight matte setting but I have
the "high speed" setting turned off which has stopped
the banding problems I was getting with my initial
prints. I have not changed the paper thickness lever
from the default it was set on as it came out of the
box (0). The only problem I had initially was with the
Continuous Ink System - I could not get the vacum pump
procedure to work so resorted to pulling the ink
through the bottom cartridge holes with the syringe
and adaptor provided in the kit. (My only gripe is
that the MIS procedure does not even mention how to do
this, I had to work this out for myself). Oh well
experimenting is half (or is it all) the fun.
Good luck with your printing.

I've begun to use MIS/InkSupply.com's new VM Sepia-Neutral inkset in
one of my 1160s and on Epson Archival Matte (EAM)/Epson Enhanced
Matte(EEM). I follow the workflow of Paul Roark's on that site,
including the heavyweight-matte setting. (I don't think it matters,
but I'm on a Mac.)

When I still had Epson's inks in the printer, and wanted to check its
alignment on EAM/EEM and Museo, I asked on this site and others about
whether to use the "0" or "+" setting. To my surprise, no one said
"+" and several people said "0", so that's what I've used, without
any alignment or other problems I've noticed.

The + is for thicker papers.

>>The + is for thicker papers.<<

Is EAM classified as a thicker paper? I haven't seen any reference to this
and it feels to me like it could be classified either way.

Thanks,
Doug

Interesting. I called MIS and they said to use the + setting. Another
person I know uses the plus setting. Guess I will just have to do more
testing.

Thanks,
Doug

We use the '0' setting on our 1160 and align specifically for the
paper at that setting, and it works great! EAM in our opinion is not
a 'thicker' paper, but it could be considered borderline. Any thicker
than EAM and we recommend using the '+' setting.

There are multiple factors: thickness, firmness, stiffness, and texture.
DotWorks fine art paper (FHM) is a 100% rag stock, which is "fluffy" like
watercolor paper, and even the untextured version has a deep matte to it.
Compared to that, their new Card Stock paper (FH2) is far less fluffy, even
if the caliper is greater, and the surface still has a good matte to it, but
not as deep at the Fine Art stock; it is much stiffer however. Determining
which setting to use with either of these on a given printer would require
considering all four of these factors, as well as others, like the feed route
(for printers with a tray path and a straight path) and roll curl (for roll
based uses). Stiff papers may fed well via straight routes with the "0"
setting, but require the "+" setting for paper tray feed, unless a tail
margin sufficient to allow for end-of-sheet "snap" is included. Personally I
find the margin required in such cases, even with the "+" setting.

Doug,

In the several months since I got seriously into quad printing, I've
been using EAM at the "0" setting, Lyson QB inkset, Heavyweight
Matte setting for printing (bouncing between standard RGB
curves and Luminos' curve set, in PS6), with very good results .
