There are multiple factors: thickness, firmness, stiffness, and texture.
DotWorks fine art paper (FHM) is a 100% rag stock, which is "fluffy" like
watercolor paper, and even the untextured version has a deep matte to it.
Compared to that, their new Card Stock paper (FH2) is far less fluffy, even
if the caliper is greater, and the surface still has a good matte to it, but
not as deep at the Fine Art stock; it is much stiffer however. Determining
which setting to use with either of these on a given printer would require
considering all four of these factors, as well as others, like the feed route
(for printers with a tray path and a straight path) and roll curl (for roll
based uses). Stiff papers may fed well via straight routes with the "0"
setting, but require the "+" setting for paper tray feed, unless a tail
margin sufficient to allow for end-of-sheet "snap" is included. Personally I
find the margin required in such cases, even with the "+" setting.
