scanning b&w (slightly off-topic)

I own a Flextight II but have the opportunity to buy a used
ScanMate 5000 for $3000 including Colot Quartet software.
What would you prefer :
A flextight precision II CCD scanner or a used ScanMate 5000
Drum scanner. Anyone at the list who has some experiences
with drum- vs. CCD scannings for scanning B&W negs for quad
printing (piezo pro24/Epson7000)?

We had used a ScanMate (albeit not a 5000) for many years. I am not a
big fan of Color Quartet. We just took delivery of an Imacon 848. I have
also used the Precision II for grayscale scans. Both the PII and the 848
do beautiful, sharp scans of grayscale negs. BTW I have been using
Russel Brown's Hue/Sat technique for grayscale conversions from RGB
images and it's wonderful.

No question. Stick with the Imacon. The routine of drum cleaning,
affixing negs or chromes to the drum, etc. gets old very quickly. IMO
(please . lets not start a thread on this) the Imacon scans are every
bit as good as the drum. Shadows are clean and I'm sticking with my
story.
