Am giving up on my 1160...

Am giving up on my 1160...

2002-07-12 by Jerry Olson

I just did everything ever mentioned on the list about cleaning the 1160
printer. Everything. Amazingly, nozzle checks and head alignment are
perfect. I still have corduroy type banding in and around the 75 percent
black position, almost looks like a dry brush dragged across the paper
in perfect 1/8 inch bands, and cannot get rid of it. I suppose it is
about time to give it up and order another 1280. I've squirted pure
ammonia through the heads, and did all the other tricks mentioned on the
list and in the archives. I usually never have had trouble with quad
inks on a 1160 printer.

Out of curiosity, has anyone ever printed on Eclipse satine paper, 1280
printer, and Epson's BLACK ink only? Is there still metamerism? Can you
use 2880 with mat paper if you set the media setting for glossy?

Thanks,

Jerry

Jerry,

Does your 1160 print clean purge patterns? My 1160, just before totally
biting the dust, would give a good nozzle check but could not sustain the
performance long enough to give a solid purge pattern after about 1/4 inch
of printing.

The total cost of my 1160 repair -- new heads -- was $188.

Jerry, are the bands perpendicular to the head travel? I have successfully
eliminated such bands with *repeated* cleaning & oiling of the transverse
bar.

I recently had a head replaced on an 1160 and asked the repair tech person
about banding. His simple reply was that most banding was related to paper
or head transport.

So my next suggestion would be to carefully examine your rollers & clean
them with isopropyl alcohol.

Re: [Digital BW] Am giving up on my 1160...

2002-07-12 by Jerry Olson

Hi Paul,

No, it doesn't print a clean purge pattern.

Around the 75 percent black position, the pattern looks mottled, or
speckly, sort of like the texture you'd get by dragging a drybrush
loaded with black lightly over the 75 percent black strip. I just
printed an entire sheet of 13x19 paper using 75 percent black for the
whole sheet. In places, it still bands, and has that mottle effect.
When printing a gradient from black to white, if you stand back about 6
feet, all you can see is black, middle gray and very light gray/white.
Only 3 different colors. there's a fairly sharp delineation between the
3 tones, and from 6 feet, it almost looks like a sharp line. Something
is very wrong with this printer. (Printing from RGB with your cool curve.)

I think I'll get another 1280 and get a profile for it on Eclipse satine
paper using epson inks.

Even the black patch isn't all that black from my 1160 now. It sat
unused for over 9 months, so I suppose that's what did it in.

Thank you Barry, I will try that as a last resort. Hadn't even thought
of that.

Re: [Digital BW] Am giving up on my 1160...

Jerry-

Hearing that it sat for 9 months, I would offer one more suggestion
that saved a old old "new" printer for me.

Put a couple of cleaning carts in and run a purge file every day or
so and at the same time, re-soak the pad where the heads rest.

I did this for about 2 1/2 weeks and then tried some ink again (I
used OEM ink since a lot of people think it has something in it that
is a clog buster).

This sounds like a lot to do, but it just takes a couple of minutes
every day.

Good luck.

Re: [Digital BW] Am giving up on my 1160...

2002-07-13 by Jerry Olson

I don't have the purge cartridges Tom or even an old 1280 set of oem
inks, but I did force pure ammonia through the nipples of the print
head. You'd think that would have done it. What do you do with the CIS
cartridges while you have the purge cartridges in the printer?

Speedball

2002-07-14 by Murray Zaharia

I thought I would pass this little tidbit along.
I had a plugged nozzle on my 1160 that I just could not clear. One
single black nozzle. I tried everything: windex, purging fluid, soaking
the pad and letting it sit, directly injecting Windex and MediaStreet
purging fluid under pressure with a syringe through the intake spike on
the head. Nothing worked. This is the first time I have ever had a clog
that I could not clear. I finally took it into a local Epson Authorized
repair center thinking I was going to have to replace the head. They
unplugged it. The service guy invited me into the back and showed me
what they use. They used a janitorial product called Speedball 2000
made by Butchers.
