Doesn't do a thing except make the print blotchy.

Agreed. I have the same problems with any kind of acrylic spray on EAM
paper. However one spray I know works really well with this paper. I
forgot the brand name but it's a photographic lacquer you can purchase
at photographic supplies store. I heard the Triangle Bulldog Ultra
also works great but I have never tried it.

Can you say what these sprays do? Are you looking for image protection,
gloss, dmax...what?

I only use the spray for prints that are to be displayed without any
other protective measures. There's no need to spray prints displayed
under glass. I have done any experiment to study the the loss of dmax
due to the spray but I'm afraid there is some.

everything I read on spraying, in earlier said D-max increased. That
is why I asked about EAM

Re: [Digital BW] Spraying EAM

2002-07-19 by nick_h_nugent

I believe there is a D-max increase on glossy, and Epson heavy weight
matte even using the inexpensive Krylon spray, but for some strange
reason I just could not get any good results with the Epson Archival
Matte except for using the Photographic Lacquer spray with a slight
loss in D-max. Maybe one should not use any spray on EAM papers. They
may soak too much of the spray instead of allowing it to dry on the
surface.

Re: [Digital BW] Spraying EAM

2002-07-19 by Robert Morrison

The glossy papers have good fluid hold out and thus the sprays sit on top of
the paper...creating a gloss which increases dmax. To get this effect with
matte papers you need something that will seal the paper and then provide
the gloss with more coats. The sprays don't do this. As you will see from
the archives I and others have done a lot of work with coating prints. EAM
does not coat well with anything. Eclipse Satine and Museo are the best
matte papers to coat. There are recipes in the archives that you can
try...but it is much more work than a quick coat of Krylon. By far the
easiest way to increase dmax at this point is to switch to the Piezotone
inks. If you want gloss or satin for the sake of the finish then I would
try Brightcube Semi-Matte with Krylon or get out your varnish brush or meyer
rod and try some of the formula's in the archives.
