Going up to a 1270 would allow you to use the same curves for each machine,
and there would be no surprises.

MIS told me it takes a different viscosity ink.  So, the current MIS inks
might not work well with it.  It is supposed to be a very nice machine,
however.

The 1270 seems like the path of least resistance at this point.

The 1280, and MIS VM inks, or FS inks are great. They just came out with
yet another inkset. Very reasonable cost, high quality prints. Don't
know much about the canon. Regardless of the 2200 print quality, you
still are faced with a $90 or more ink cost for a single set of
cartridges. And they're quite small.

No, the quality is equal. But they are just now discontinuing the 1280
printer, so you may want to get that one, with discount/rebate.
