PiezoTone-PhotoRag 306 Hr. Fade test

PiezoTone-PhotoRag 306 Hr. Fade test

2002-07-27 by Paul Roark

My fade test of PiezoTone Neutral-Warm on Photo Rag has reached 306 hours.

Relative to FS and FS-N (and anything I've ever tested) the PT-NW midtones
are doing very well indeed, showing no warming and very little fading --
very impressive. The numbers from the X-Rite spectrophotometer are below.
I have e-mailed a scan to Martin for posting in the Files section.

The PT black is showing considerable fade and warming. On my monitor, the
warming is not visible, but in person it is. The fade is such that at only
306 hours the PiezoTone black has lost its edge over the MIS FS black. I
fully expect that the MIS FS black will end up darker than the PT black. I
will continue this test at a later date, so we will see what happens.

The super inkset, in my view, would be the PT midtones with the MIS FS
black.

Here are the X-Rite density readings: (C, M, Y, & Visual order)

PT-NW 50% Control: 0.63, 0.65, 0.70, 0.64
     306 Hr. Test: 0.62, 0.64, 0.69, 0.63

     100% Control: 1.82, 1.82, 1.81, 1.82
     306 Hr. Test: 1.66, 1.72, 1.75, 1.69

FS 50% Control: 0.66, 0.67, 0.71, 0.66
     306 Hr. Test: 0.55, 0.60, 0.66, 0.57

     100% Control: 1.74, 1.73, 1.73, 1.73
     306 Hr. Test: 1.66, 1.68, 1.70, 1.67

FS-N 50% Control: 0.72, 0.70, 0.69, 0.71
     306 Hr. Test: 0.62, 0.62, 0.61, 0.62

As usual Paul thanks for testing and sharing the results.

From reading your charts it seems the MIS FS-N black has less warming
and fading than the MIS FS black so why not the PT midtones and the
MIS FS-N black? Or are the MIS FN black and MIS FS-N blacks the same
(as I think perhaps I had heard here before?)?

Also, if one sets up a CFS with the PT midtones and the MIS FS (or
FS-N) black would there need to be any adjustments in the drives and
curves used? i.e. if I currently use MIS-FS inks with the Peizo driver
(and sometimes with Epson driver/Randall curves) will I also be able
to use the same but with the PT midtones inks installed instead of the
MIS-FS midtones?

Best regards,
 Richard
