What quality range is this scanner? If it is one of the under $400 bunch, you can't expect to get professional results in the deep shadows, especially if this is a flatbed scanner. The cheaper ones just don't have the needed density range. If it is a high quality scanner, one of the many settings may be wrong. I know on mine there are so many different settings it can drive you nuts. And if just one of the important ones are off, it can throw off your scan quality a lot!
