Effect of preservative sprays or coatings

Effect of preservative sprays or coatings

2002-09-24 by heliar

Given that one might already use the best of the available "archival"
ink/paper combinations,
is there a particular kind of preservative coating or spray, in conjunction
with UV glass, which will gurantee the best possible archival permanence ?

Thanks !

To the best of my knowledge there has been no published testing on this for
the inks that digital BW users actually use. About a year ago I did a south
window test of a number of acrylic polymers. I found about a 50-100%
improvement in density loss after 6 weeks in a bright southern california
window using the original PiezoBW inks on a variety of different papers.
With respect to lightfastness, it didn't seem to matter which acrylic
polymers were used, however, it is a difficult task to actually formulate
these polymers to have all the properties that photographers want. Its
important to note that film thickness was considerably more with these
polymers than you would get from one of the aerosol spray products on the
market...I think this is absolutely critical. The reports that I have heard
from users have suggested that the sprays don't do anything positive for
lightfastness of pigment based inks (they can help with mar resistance,
though).
