gamma setting
2002-10-05 by Stephen Kobrin
I have just started printing with MIS-VM quad inks on a 1200 using Paul Roark's curves (thank you Paul) and am confused about which Gamma setting to use -- looking back through the files I see both 1.8 and 2.2 recommended. Am I correct that 2.2 is preferred (on a PC)? Also, I find that I get better results scanning B&W film when I set my Nikon LS-2000 to RGB and then convert to grayscale in PS-7 (I am doing 16 bit scans and first desaturate and then convert). Is there a risk that this first conversion from rgb to grayscale will degrade the image (I convert back to sRGB before applying the curves)? If so, I will try grayscale scans again. By the way, even my first attempts using the MIS-VM quad inks on EAM are better by degrees of magnitude than even my best results using PS tri- and quad tones. I suspect, however, that everyone else knows that already. Thanks, Steve
