I was using the Lyson Quad Blacks on an Epson 860 and the Lyson Monochrome 265g Pro Glossy paper. Quad blacks were too magenta for me and I went to the Lyson Small Gamut. I don't think the Lyson 265g Pro Glossy works as well with the Small Gamut ink. Can anyone make a recommendation? Has anyone tried the Canon Pro Glossy or the Ilford Galerie Glossy? thanks to all, Rick

When I print on glossy paper with a colour cast (i.e. I 'tone' the pic warm or cold), I usually get a nasty blue in the lighter shadows. I get this even when I tone the pic blue! This manifests itself much more on glossy papers than the matt / rough 'art' papers that you can get. (Most of the time it is not there at all on the matt or art papers.) The nasty blue does not appear immediately but after a bit of time. I have tried Ilford's papers and they do this. My best successes have been with Olmec 310 art paper, which I can get cheapish here in the UK. Lyson Soft Art is nice as well but it is costly. I also use the heavyweight matt papers and they show the nasty blue effect a bit, but nowhere as much as the glossy papers. In short, I have found matt/art papers the best so far. I don't know if this is a problem with the ICC profiles or any colour management issues - it just seems that the printer / driver is a little over enthusiastic with the blues at times. I find this whole matter confusing, so if anyone can shed any light on this I would be grateful. I have found that I also get markedly different print colours when looking at the print under different light - tungsten, flourescent and daylight. Each is different. Hope this helps Steve Taylor

I think I get the best glossy results with Small Gamut inks on Ilford Smooth Gloss. I tried both the Classic Gloss and Smooth Gloss and decided the Smooth looked just a bit better. I'm now working out of a 250 sheet box of the stuff. Cheers, Kip At 10/8/2002 06:44 AM +0000, you wrote:

Does the Ilford glossy fade at all. The Ilford literature says it will slightly fade after a short amount of time and is to be expected. I have not done any controlled fade testing. I do have a print that's been sitting in a south facing picture window for about three months, just to see what heavy sunlight would do to it, and while it doesn't look as dark as a fresh print would it really isn't that ugly. None of my regular photos would ever get that kind of abuse, so I'm just not being concerned about fading at this point. Again, not a scientific test, though. Rick (and others) While this does not address your question directly, John Read of Marrutt, the UK distributor/retailer of Lyson inks, is recommending custom profiles for Lyson inks. He has posted links at the bottom of his main web page www.marrutt.co.uk . When I return next to the UK I may investigate the quality produced as I have no personal experience of the results.
