After printing PS tri- and quadtones for a few years I switched to MIS-VM inks on EAM paper a few weeks ago and noticed a dramatic improvement in the range of tones captured and in, at least, what appears to me, to be the overall definition of my prints. The MIS-VM inks also seem to be much more consistent. However, comparted to PS tri-tones printed on Sommerst Velvet Enhanced paper, the prints on EAM seem to be a bit flatter, what I can only describe as lacking some of the "life" of the PS tri-tones. I have experimented with layers set to "overlay" varying the opacity, and with attempting to increase the contrast in various ways, which helps, but something is still missing in terms of "sparkle" or "snap." The prints are far from flat, but something is missing. (I scan in 16 bit.) Is this simply a characteristic of EAM? Would an alternative paper such as Hahnemuhle Rag make a difference? Or, as I suspect, is this just a matter of technique which will come as I gain more experience with the quad inks? I am quite sure that my settings are correct for Paul R.'s curves. I print on an Epson 1200 and do not have problems with banding, etc. Sorry for what, at least for this list, is a very elementary question. Steve Kobrin
