Show in Wash DC area

2002-11-14 by Andrew Unger

I saw a show at the Factory Photoworks Gallery in the Torpedo
Factory, Alexandria, VA by Colleen Spencer Henderson, a member of
this group. The show is called "Reflections on the Coast." There
are about 12 beautifully produced images of the eastern coast. She
has printed with MIS-VM ink on the pebbly side of Eclipse Satine
Bright White. She told me that she thought the pebbly side tends to
print a little lighter than the smoother side. The gallery is
located in space #312 at the Torpedo Factory, 105 N. Union Street,
Alexandria, VA. There are opportunities to see other photographers
at the gallery and in other spaces in the building. The show is up
until Dec. 2.

I stopped by the other day to take a look. Nice prints. There's also a
good show of panoramic landscapes (color) in a gallery on the first
floor. They were labeled as Iris prints. A good opportunity to check out
some nice examples of digital printing, if you're in the area.

After that, swing into DC and check out the Emmet Gowin show at the
Corcoran. Really stunning work, even if they are silver prints.

what's Emmet Gowin doing recently ... haven't seen his newer work ...
remember the 'family' stuff ... the monument ... the flight images ...

I saw a retrospective of his at the Brooklyn Museum about ten years ago
that included all of that. Since then, he's been doing only the aerial
landscape stuff, or at least that's all that's in the Corcoran show.
It's called "Changing the Earth", and features mostly images of
human-altered landscapes (agriculture, mining, nuclear testing, etc.)
that are really beautiful in a strange way. I caught a lecture he gave a
couple of weeks ago, and he was quite charming. And he didn't say one
word about anything technical, which was refreshing.
