MIS 2200 (UltraChrome) Matte Black first look - Correction

MIS 2200 (UltraChrome) Matte Black first look - Correction

2002-12-11 by Paul Roark

(First post overstated shadow coolness measure.)

I received samples of MIS's 2200 black inks. My first look indicates that
they have some promising possibilities.

The Dmax reading for the 1160 Epson driver (HW matte paper setting, no color
adjustment) are as follows:

	EAM - 1.56,
Eclipse Satine Bright White - 1.60,
	Legion Photo Matte - 1.69.

With LPM and a draft (too light) Epson Archival K-based FS/Piezo inkset and
the Piezo driver, the dmax is 1.63. It will go up with the next iteration
of the midtone inkset. This combination of MIS Matte Black and Epson
Archival K FS comes the closest to a true silver-selenium tone that I've
seen. The midtone is just a hair cool (c=.61, m=.61, y=.60, visual=.61),
while the deep shadows actually get up to 0.05 units cool at 100%, which is
how cold my selenium silver prints get.

I've put this and some other new inks/inksets into the fader to see if we
really have something interesting here.

So that means that the MIS 2200 replacement black is nothing like the actual
epson 2200 matte black given that EAM performs at 1.73 and Eclipse and
Legion Photo Matte are very poor around 1.5. This seems to indicate that
these inks wouldn't work as replacement inks in the 2200 at all. This seems
to be the perennial problem. The 3rd party inks don't behave like the
actual inks and give real problems trying to profile them. Now this may be
an interesting ink for a quad set...but my hunch is that Cone's Museum black
would be better.

Paul,
You have got me confused. Are the inks you mentions B/W inks for the
2200 ie for all positions, or just the black ink postions? Are they
in carts with chips or are they refills?
