Technically, NiƩpce coated a polished pewter plate with a solution of bitumen of Judea. The exposure was 8 hours on a summer day. After exposure, the latent image was rendered visible by washing the plate with a mixture of oil of lavendar and white petroleum, which dissolved away the parts of the bitumen that had not hardened by light.
