Velvet Fine Art paper and the 2200

2002-12-16 by Jon Adams

Hello All-

Let me thank you in advance for putting up with a
"new guy" question. I just purchased an Epson 2200 and
have been experimenting with different papers. The
Velvet fine art paper looks great but how do you keep
the ink from rubbing off?

The ink actually rubs off?

I've not heard of this!

Jerry

Hello Jerry -

I am using the standard Epson inks and their brand
paper. The photos look great. My intentions were to
sell photos made from the 2200 but not if they're so
fragile. The morning after I made a few prints, the
ink on one of them rubbed off with my thumb (some
pressure was applied) and onto the border of the
print. I was hoping to hear that there was some kind
of spray I could apply to the surface of the print. Or
perhaps switch to a different kind of paper.

According to EPSON the inks need at least 24 hours to
cure before they
are "durable" on that paper... Supposedly it is the
same coating used
on EEM..

As a photographer who is weighing the option to sell
photographs made from digital printers in lieu of the
traditional "silver" based photographs, I consider the
quality of the output from the current inkjet printers
on the papers now available to be most worthy of
selling. They look fabulous. But I have a problem with
their durabliity. It is one thing if the photograph is
to be framed and hung on a wall somewhere. It is quite
another if the photograph is to be placed in an album
where it will be repeatedly touched. And as far as I
am concerned, papers like Epson's Velvet Art paper
should be touched. That's half of its charm. So I am
fishing to see if anyone can recommend a product such
as a fixative spray of some sort or perhaps a better
combination of ink and paper.
