I've never had one that lasted more than 3 and a half years, and that
one had many thousand prints through it. (An 1160).

If you are using third party cheap inks, your printer will last longer
than your prints!

 <snip>

Certainly others on this list are way more knowledgeable than me about
print lengevity, so I can't offer any real informed comment on this
other than to say that I've been using 3'rd party ink from tonerbuys.com
for about a year and the colors are good and the prints have not faded
thus far. But I view all inkjet prints as a convenience anyway, and I
mainly consider it a good way to proof digital images and create a
decent enlargement for non-archival use. When I want color enlargements
for myself or my customers to display I order chemical prints from a lab
that specializes in wedding work, made on a Fuji Frontier. They're
cheap and always of excellent quality. My personal jury is still out on
what to do about the B&W digital images - that's why I've subscribed and
have been reading this list for a while. Right now, I'm still inclined
to consider B&W film and chemical printing might still be the easiest
way to go for me (since I'm very experienced in that). But I'm still
reading and hoping to find something fairly easy and convenient that
many people agree on that will produce the quality I am used to from
traditional chemical fiber prints.

Thanks,
Ed

Hi Ed,

I am satisfied with the Generations 4 and the MIS Archival color inkset.
I don't need any more than that; now its just a matter of finding a
better paper that doesn't flake, and that has a deep black. There is no
paper that doesn't flake that I've found except the Epson EAM.
Unfortunately, they changed it, and now the black isn't as deep as the
old paper was. They now call it Enhanced matte, but they actually should
call it unenhanced matte. It is whiter, and doesn't have the logo on
the back, but the blacks aren't as deep as before. All other papers
I've used flake. Some MUCH worse than others.
