It should be running 2 or 3 times faster on Jaguar. Something's wrong
somewhere. How much memory do you have devoted to photoshop? How much
RAM has your computer?

Jerry, and others who've shared their time,

Seems my problem is that I'm not running Jaguar (10.2). The OS X I have is
10.1, and I'm just now getting around to installing it.

I'll buy up to 10.2, and give it another try. Also, for some reason, 10.1
wouldn't install on the same drive that 9.2, and Photoshop, are on. That,
in itself, could be a problem slowing me down. Apple tech support says
something strange is going on there, and suggested Jaguar. I'd love to get
2 - 3 times more speed. I'm running a G4 with dual 550s and 1.5 Gb RAM, and
was allowing PS a max of 80%.

Looks as if you need to drive a Jaguar to go fast. Upgrading to 10.2 solved
my speed problems. Again, thanks to all.

Jaguar is great, and worth the money, but I really don't think it is going to make the speed improvement happen. I think the 80% number might be part of your problem - allocating _less_ might help the rest of the system have enough RAM to do its work too. (I used to have mine set to 80% too and found that the system as a whole (and ps also) worked better when I reduced it to 60%)

You might also check your energystar settings, maybe the PS drive is spinning down in an unusual way.

Hi Ron:

I'd highly recommend wiping your Hard Drive clean, then either partition(for
a scratch disk and possibly a files partition) and install X.2 on the first
partition with the built-in Classic, or put 9.2.2 on a separate partition and
run your OS9 apps independantly(as if there was no OSX).

PS7 now has the same memory percentage allocation amount in the Prefs as
Windows and I haven't done side by side tests to see how this number affects
performance. I've been keeping it at 90%.

Has anyone tested different percentages?

All the best!

Good luck with Jaguar. I went back to system 9.2.2 There were way too
many bugs and things that didn't
work correctly in system X, especially third party photoshop plugins.
